TPO single-ply roof membranes are constructed from ethylene propylene rubber. They combine the durability of EPDM rubber with the proven performance of weldable seams. TPO is a heat-reflective and energy efficient roofing systems. TPO single-ply roofing membranes provide exceptional resistance to ultraviolet, ozone and chemical exposure. The seam strengths of TPO are said to be 3 to 4 times those of EPDM’s adhesive and tape seams.
TPO commercial has good flexibility to allow for building movement and is extremely resistant to tears and punctures. TPO’s are available in thicknesses of either 45 mils (.045″) or 60 mils (.060″). Although they are available in grey and black, the majority of our customers select white to increase the roofs reflectivity. Tarrant Roofing installs TPO membranes that are fully-adhered, or mechanically-attached. Fully-adhered roofs are “glued” to the substrate using a special adhesive. The glue creates a chemical bond with the membrane. In a mechanically-attached system, a screw-type fastener secures the membrane to substrate.

Modified Bitumen is asphalt that has modifiers added to it to give it plastic or rubber-like properties. They are typically installed as a two-ply system and are almost always fully adhered.
Tarrant Roofing installs two types of modified bitumen membranes: SBS polymer-modified bitumen and APP polymer modified bitumen. SBS modifiers are commonly installed in hot moppings of asphalt or cold adhesive. Many of the new products are available in a self-adhering roll. APP modifiers are usually heat welded or applied using a torch. SBS modifiers give asphalt a rubberized quality, while APP modifiers give it a more plasticized quality.
The modified bitumen products used by Tarrant Roofing can have a mineral coated surface or a smooth surface. While installing modified bitumen, we often need to remove the old roof down to the decking. Next we install fiber-board insulation on top of the decking to increase strength and moisture resistance. Then a base sheet is installed which is either mechanically fastened or self-adhered. The final step is installing the modified bitumen membrane which can be hot-mopped, torched, or applied using a cold process.

EPDM is a synthetic rubber that makes a good choice for commercial flat roofs. EPDM is a flexible membrane that has been in use since the 1960’s and has survived some of the world’s toughest climates for over 30 years. Though it was a good product to begin with, EPDM has advanced significantly in the last ten years. Problems previously associated with it included moisture gain under the membrane and that EPDM did not like to adhere to itself causing seam problems. Using a vapor barrier has solved the moisture gain problems and seaming has become extremely simple with the addition of factory applied tape. This has greatly reduced labor costs and installation time. The addition of factory applied tape also makes for stronger and neater seams.
When installing EPDM, Tarrant Roofing uses two different methods. Mechanically attached is a less expensive method and has been proven to work well in areas with low wind velocity. Fully adhered is the most expensive installation method but will also guarantee a stronger and longer lasting flat roof.
The latest products of EPDM have been combined with a polyester fleece backing and fabricated with a patented hot melt adhesive technology. This provides consistent bond strength between the fleece backing and the membrane and has resulted in largely eliminating shrinkage of the product. It also allows the product to stretch to three times its normal size and move with the building through changing weather conditions.
